Dirt and Dual Sport Rides

April 5: April Fools Challenge / Trail Ride

This ride using Carl's Dual Sport Ride Classifications is a "Challenge Ride" that will test the skills of a advanced rider. It is approx 75-80 miles and offers miles of horse made single track, long fast sand washes, some very fun and challenging canyon riding including "Dead Cow" wash (aka: "Dead Club Prez Wash" ... sorry SteveO ), the "Fright On The Right" mountain side hill experience and the "Holy Sh!t" downhill where you will drop over 1500 vertical feet in less than a mile. It also offers some of the most fantastic scenery and mountain vistas in the Washoe area. This loop is for advanced riders only who enjoy a challenging route.

There will also will be a "Trail Ride" loop approx 70-75 miles that will bypass most of the advanced sections focusing more on moderate washes, roads and moderate horse made single track, including several old mine sites and vista points.

Please have your bike in top shape, pack a lunch and your camera and be ready to grin for a week as this is some of the best single track around Reno. Please RSVP with Carl Adams or Darrol Taylor for directions to start point and start time.

April 12: Dual Sport Ground Navigation

Carl Adams will lead a 4 hour map and GPS course starting at 10 am from the end of Estates Blvd. The course will include instruction, a riding navigation demonstration and a riding GPS exercise. Carl will provide notes and maps. Bring lunch, pencil, motorcycle, GPS mounted on your handlebars (does not need to be a mapping GPS) and your GPS instruction book. Prior to the course make sure you know how to manually enter coordinates into your GPS, read coordinates from your GPS, mark waypoints and follow the navigation screen to a waypoint. These procedures will be demonstrated, but every model is different, so make sure you know how yours works. E-mail leader to reserve a place.

April 17-20: Shasta Trinity Alps Dual Sport Tour

Dave Brakebill & Rodger Liles will lead a 4 day tour through the Klamath and Six Rivers National Forests and surrounding areas. This will be an easy multi surface exploritory 4 day, point to point camp ride. Ride will have an open agenda. Will camp in improved/unimproved camp sites at unknown locations each night. On this type of ride, restaurant meals are usually best, however back-up "meals to go" shall be a part of one's survival gear. This is a higher mileage ride geared twards larger displacement bikes. This type of ride requires your ability to: 1. Pack and transport your gear efficiently. 2. Ride your loaded bike over multiple types of surfaces, i.e. Hwy's, goat trails, dirt roads, gravel roads, two track trails, etc. 3. Sustain a minimum 8 hours plus per day in the saddle. Day's 1 and 4 will be 250 miles or more per day. Limited number of riders may better suit this "point to point" type of tour. For details and confimation contact Dave. Ride departs the Reno area 8:00AM the 17th and will return prior to sundown on Sunday the 20th.

May 3 & 4: Weekend at Black Rock

Dave Schulte will lead a Saturday loop leaving a Gerlach camp site at 10:00 am. Lodging is available at Bruno's in Gerlach for non-campers. Saturday dinner is optional at Bruno's or camp. A second loop will leave camp on Sunday at 9:00 to return mid-afternoon. Pack picnic lunch for both days. Neither route is determined and will depend on water conditions at the time. Routes classification will be "Scenic". More details to follow. Contact Dave.

May 31 & June 1: Middlegate Overnight

Mick Collins will lead a scenic ride on Saturday that will go in a counter-clockwise direction from Middlegate crossing the Stillwater Range. We'll be visiting Wonder again (everyone seemed to enjoy the old mine), Hercules, Geiger Gap, Victor, then Fairview (historic site on the North side of 50), La Plata and then back to Middlegate. La Plata was a Churchill County seat at one time. Distance is approximately 103 miles and it should be much more interesting and different than last year. NOTE: NO GAS on this loop. Bring your own lunch. Our lunch stop will be a little north of Job Peak at about 7800'. The views at the top are magnificent. You can see almost 360 degrees.

On Sunday, Mick will lead an adventure ride which may include single track with steep, rocky up and downs hills.

You can choose to ride one or both days depending on your druthers. There is dry camping available for RVs right in the parking lot. There are a few "motel" rooms (I use that word loosely!) available as well. Middlegate typically has a barbecue featuring steak and all the trimmings on Saturday night. Contact Mick to reserve a place.

June 14: Dual Sport GPS Navigation Ride

Carl Adams will provide maps and GPS waypoints which will lead you through local mountains and valleys for approximately 150 miles. The ride will start at 8 am at the Boomtown gas station. This route is entirely on pavement and good graded roads and is suitable for all dual sports including heavyweights with dual purpose tires. The idea is to navigate the route from one way point to the next. You will choose riding partners at the start and go by twos, several minutes apart. Bring pencil, money for lunch, motorcycle, GPS mounted on your handlebars (does not need to be a mapping GPS) and your GPS instruction book. Make sure you know how to manually enter coordinates into your GPS, read coordinates from your GPS, mark waypoints and follow the navigation screen to a waypoint. E-mail leader to reserve a place and receive the waypoint file.

June TBA: Scenic Trail Ride

Start at end of Hogue Rd off Virginia Street past Bonanza Casino, around the South side of Peavine over top to Dog Valley and Crystal Mine (Stop). Then to Kyburz/Sheep Camp (Stop). Over to Little Truckee Summit and on to the Little Truckee River Falls (stop and hike to falls). Then down to Sierraville for gas and lunch at Los Dos Hermanos (now in Pizza joint) via FS roads. After lunch we will head back via Bear Valley, Sardine Valley, Long Valley, Border Town, and the North side of Peavine to Start Point. Approximately 100 miles. Will list specifics and mileage later. Will have GPS file for the ride. Mostly two track forest roads and short four wheel drive trails some steep two track down hills in the Peavine area on return (can be navigated around).

August 23: Gardnerville to Walker via Mt. Patterson

Carl Adams will lead this 120 mile dual sport ride to the top of Mt. Patterson (11,500 ft.) with lunch in Walker . This ride which features spectacular views is mostly on jeep trails with some steep rocky sections and a few stream crossings. This ride is classified as a trail ride - intended for lightweight dual sports (KTM, DRZ400, etc.) with knobby tires and riders who have well developed off-road riding skills. Experienced riders with dependable equipment only. Meet at the Gardnerville fairgrounds off Pinenut Road . Be gassed and ready to go at 9 AM. Please contact Carl to reserve a place

October 16-19: Nor-Cal Adventure Ride

Dave Brakebill will lead a 4 day tour through the Six Rivers and Mendocino National Forests and surrounding areas. This will be a faster paced, multi surface, exploritory 4 day point to point camp ride. Day's 1 and 4 will exceed 250 miles or more per day. Limited number of riders may better suit this "point to point" type of tour. For details and confimation contact Dave. Ride departs the Reno area 8:00AM the 16th and will return prior to sundown on Sunday the 19th.

October 25th: Pine Nut Mountain Adventure Ride

Allen Alexander will lead a ride through the Pine Nuts. Allen will take you on several single track routes that have been mapped for the BLM. Meet at Allen's house 9:30 AM and ready to ride at 10:00 AM. Should be back by approx 3:00 PM. Contact Allen if you are interested in attending.

Street Rides

July 19: Sierra Foothills Street Ride

Jeff Phillips will lead a one day Street Ride on some very scenic roads. We will meet for Breakfast at Bordertown between 7:30 and 8:00am. Departing Bordertown at 9:00 am sharp, we will start North on I-395 to Hwy. 70 East and take a 15-20 minute break to stretch our butts in Quincy. We will then continue to follow Hwy. 70 Southeast through the Feather River Canyon towards our lunch stop in/near Oroville. After lunch, we will depart at approximately 1:00pm. Leaving Oroville, we will take back roads through the towns of Bangor, Oregon House and Dobbins until we join Hwy. 49 to our afternoon stretch in Downieville. After 15-20 minutes we will continue on Hwy. 49 through Sierraville and Loyalton, and then rejoin Hwy. 70 in Vinton, heading eastbound to I-395 and South again to Bordertown.
